Our little girl is 5 months!!!

Our little ladybug is now 5 months old! Can you believe it? Everyday we marvel at the fact that we are parents and everyday we count the blessings the the Lord has given us... But neither of us could believe (just 5 months ago) how much our lives would have been altered by this sweet baby girl!

She is making some major strides and accomplishing some major feats for a 5 month old! While no teeth have broken thru the gums, we see the white's of the tops of them. She produces more drool than a bulldog, her cheeks are forever pink (maybe she will never need blusher), the fever goes up and down every now and then... but the #1 thing that gives away how much she is teething... EVERYTHING... and there is NO prejudice here... EVERYTHING GOES IN HER MOUTH. Sometimes, if your face is close enough, she even tries to get her mouth around your nose! I know its all about her testing out the things around her too... she learns if they are hard / soft, hot/cold etc.  Its just hysterical to watch!

She weighs a little over 18 lbs and is pretty much wearing clothes that are sized 6-9 months. Although the legs in the pants are a bit long. Looks like she has mommy's long torso and short legs... I better learn how to hem on that sewing machine!  She also grew out of size 2 diapers MUCH sooner than anticipated...we have a ton of them still!

Her menu has widened from the average 7oz bottle - of which she still takes 4-5 of those a day. We have added lots of fruits and veggies though!  So far we tackled apple puree, pear puree, peach puree and bananas in the fruit category. As for veggies... we got zucchini, butternut squash, sweet potatoes (although we took those out of the rotation and will add them again later) and peas.  Peas and pears are her fav's!  She eats those 3x a day and then has cereal in the am and oatmeal in the pm.  She just started eating out of this mesh thing that you can put a banana in and freeze it!  Fabulous find!

She is down to 2 naps a day... one is longer than the other and the long one USUALLY ends up being in the afternoon. Its great having her be awake more of the daytime than asleep but its also nice to have the down time...  We finally got the bedtime routine down (thanks to many of my new mommy friends!)... We do bathtime, read books, watch a little tv (like 10 minutes... she loves Caillou), bottle and then she goes in the crib.  Most nights she talks herself to sleep but sometimes if she is really cravin some Daddy time, she stays awake until he gets home. They hang out for a few and then she is able to fall asleep much better.  All this by 8pm (most of the time)!  She still gets thrown off when we eat out of our home or there is too much excitement.  She is much like both her mommy & daddy - we need wind down time so we can sleep good... or else our bodies lie there and our brains go a million miles a miunte!~  We are still trying to cut out the swing for naps but with the weather being so crappy and us being STUCK inside all day / every day... I am letting go for a few weeks!

She is so much more aware of what is going on around her too. She has been answering to her name for quite some time but now she knows voices on the phone or when you enter the room.  She demands an audience and if you don't pay attention, she will GET IT!  She is quite the conversationalist these days... babbling in her crib when she wakes up is the best. We actually leave her there to enjoy her alone playtime... Its a guilty pleasure to hear her squeal in delight when she grabs her Piglet or Frog.  Although she is not actually MOVING yet, she finds ways to get what she wants.... she will pull a blanket closer just to get a toy... she will roll over half way just to get a toy then bring it back. Kayla loves to be lazy! She works us over alot and we fall for it! She is not yet sitting up on her own but if you sit her up, she stays put and balances pretty good.

Like I said... EVERYTHING goes in the mouth!

Peas please... my favorite!

Super Kayla... one of her favorite playtimes!

I found my grandpa's glasses - you like them?

Happy Valentine's Day!

This is me visiting Mommy's old high school - the home economics room -
where mommy learned how to cook!

Grandma & Granpa came to our house for dinner on Valentine's Day...
Grandma was letting me play with her hands!

We are in trouble once she starts moving... I found a great thing for the stairs though!

Nap time... Away with the Swing!

It seems that we have officially broken Kayla of the swing naptime... with the exception of her long afternoon naps. Which I might say, she very well COULD sleep in her crib but to make sure she takes a nice LONG nap, we are keeping to the swing for a bit longer. Kayla only has ONE requirement when napping in her crib... her friends must all be there to join her or she will not fall asleep... Take a look!

One sleepy girl

This is hysterical! Someone was too sleepy for lunch! I ended up letting her sleep it off in the chair and when she woke up she was quite hungry!

Laughter is so therapeutic...

A few weeks ago (before the holidays) we heard Kayla laugh so hard that her whole body shook... she made us laugh and we just went back and forth... we finally caught it on vidoe one night when Brian got home from work...

Sippy Cups are the RAGE!

So at Kayla's last Dr. visit, the Dr. suggested we start giving her a sippy cup to play with... not only does she play with it, but Jesus, she knows what to do with it too!  Funny thing is that when we used to give her water in a bottle, she refused it... now she can't get enough!

First Foods (cont.)

Here is a quick video of Kayla's 1st time trying real foods (other than cereal). She really likes some of the foods - others, not so much!

Kayla is 4 months!!!

Our baby girl is growing up!  She just turned 4 months old.  She currently weighs in at 17 pounds 3 ounces and measures 26 and a half inches long.  She has been eating rice & barley cereal for about a month and will begin oatmeal this evening.  She is eating cereal twice a day and we were given the go ahead to begin introducing her to fruits and veggies!!!  The doctor suggested that we move her from the infant carrier car seat to the convertible car seat b/c she is getting so big.  She got the next round of shots and was such a trooper.  She let out a really loud scream and then stopped.  The doctor also told us it was ok to take her swimming so expect to see pictures from our visit at the Community Center. She also has two teeth coming in but the Dr. thinks it may be a slow moving situation.

Kayla is down to three naps a day and is trying to get on a routine... she sleeps anywhere from 6-9 hours at night. She stills sleeps mostly in her swing during the day but we are working on the transition to the crib.  She loves standing up but does not have any balance yet.  She is sitting up on her own for a few minutes at a time... then she takes a dive and ends up on her tummy.  She actually enjoys tummy time much more these days.  She will talk and talk and talk - not that we understand what she is saying but boy does she have alot to say!  She loves hanging out in her walker (which is on carpet and does not move yet) and her exersaucer (which she has not realized spins around).  She LOVES playing in the tub with her little squirt toys too!   She holds and plays with toys all by herself. Everything she can hold goes in her mouth... EVERYTHING! She is a big fan of the Sprout Network and some of the cartoons... but we listen to music most of the day.

Here are some pictures of things in the life of Kayla over the past month!

Someone is trying to break out of her crib!

Can anyone get a little privacy around here?

See mommy, I can hold a spoon and eat my fingers at the same time!

I love this new exersaucer toy... although I am not sure how it
lets me stand up, spin around and sit down!

Kayla can not decide which toys to play with so she plays with them all!

Tummy time after tubby time... this way mommy can lotion up my back too!

This cold squishy thing helps my toothies feel so good...

I could get used to just hanging around this place!

Kayla's Christening

This past Sunday we had Kayla Christened at St. Aloysius R.C. Church in Caldwell. This is the same church where we got married about 17 months ago.  This very day in the Catholic calendar is known as the "Feast of the Baptism of the Lord"... we thought it to be very appropriate to baptize Kayla in this day. The Baptism of the Lord (or the Baptism of Christ) is the feast day commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Originally the baptism of Christ was celebrated on Epiphany, which commemorates the coming of the Magi, the baptism of Christ, and the wedding at Cana. Over time in the West, however, the celebration of the baptism of the Lord came to be commemorated as a distinct feast from Epiphany. It was really great to be surrounded by our close family and friends on this day... its the first of seven sacrements that our little baby girl has received. She is now a woman of Christ in the eyes of the church.  We chose Schelli's Aunt Mary (who is married to her Uncle Paul) as Kayla's godmother. We felt that she is the strongest christian woman on Schelli's side of the family and she would be an amazing role model for Kayla - both in the christian world and out.  We asked Brian's younger brother Kevin to be Kayla's godfather. It was a very difficult choice for Brian to make but in the end we both feel that Kevin will also be a role model for Kayla. Hoping that she will grow up to marry someone in her godfather's shadow.  Kevin & Mary were so excited to fullfill their roles and even gave a short speech at the luncheon. We really are truly blessed (and will continue to say this) ... We are surrounded by such amazing friends and family!

Our little girl is now baptized!

Let It Snow!

With all the snowfall this winter so far, we were a bit hesitant to bring Kayla out to check things out. New Years Eve Day when it snowed - a bit earlier than the weathermen expected - and the plows did not come, we decided that our condo community was way too pretty to not show her what this snow was all about! At first she gave a very perplexing look - like "I am warm everywhere but my nose.... what's this white stuff falling on my face... I love the taste of it... ok love the snow... hate the hat!" We only stayed out long enough to walk to the gazebo and take pictures and then we came back inside! Can't wait until Winter 2010 when she can walk and play outside all by herself. Daddy is looking forward to showing her how to make a snowman!

Kayla takes on Rice Cereal... and wins!

We decided to try to give Kayla cereal from a spoon for the 1st time tonight. She sits up all by herself in the highchair, is never satisfied after a full 7+ ounces, stares us down when we eat... so we thought we'd try. Most people and pediatrician's say wait until 4 months... and on New Years Day she will be 15 wks old... we won't do fruits or veggies until the 4 months but we are going to do cereal for the next month. We have been giving her a plastic spoon to play with for about 2 wks, she picks it up and try's to put it near her mouth (not really aiming)... its a chunky "take away" so its safe. She was so excited... not that she had ANY idea what was coming... At first she was like... "mmm whats this". Then she pushed it out alot with her toungue. Then we figured out that if you keep the spoon near her mouth and keep scooping up the stuff that comes out, she likes to lick and chew on the spoon. We could actually hear her swallowing the very soupy like cereal! We'd say it was a big success!

All ready!
